Painting (Full Year Course) Core Course – APS61/APS62 – 2.0 Credits
This course is an entry level painting class designed for students who have limited formal training in painting. The course will expose students to visual principles that will assist them in creating pictorial space on two dimensional surfaces. Students will paint from observation and references and will become familiar with basic acrylic, watercolor, gouache, tempera and oil painting materials and techniques. This course consists of demonstration of concepts and techniques, and subsequent completion of projects exhibiting students’ grasp of these skills and concepts. Students will participate in group discussions and presentations including critiques of other student artwork and will be encouraged to use proper art terminology to discuss their work. Concepts introduced in this class include transitioning from drawing to painting, color mixing and theory, color- value relationships, composition, spacial relationships, surface qualities, various techniques including: under-painting, wiping, mark-making, glazing, scumbling and impasto, and the use of various tools.
